This past Wednesday, Eunomia Foundation Chairman, April Dunn, joined 25 additional volunteers at a local Reality Fair at Warwick Middle School in Lititz PA. Together they were able to reach 330 7th grade students!
We would like to thank Steve Turpin from Lanco FCU for organizing this event, and providing the opportunity for our team to support such a worthwhile cause.
Wondering what a Reality Fair is?
As defined on the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association’s website, “A Financial Reality Fair is an interactive financial literacy tool for young adults in high school, technical school, Job Corp, or college. The Financial Reality Fair concept is a unique opportunity for students to experience some of the financial challenges they will face when they start life on their own. It’s a hands-on experience in which students identify their career choice and starting salaries, then complete a budget sheet requiring them to live within their monthly salary while paying for basics such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and food. Additional expenditures such as entertainment and travel are factored in as well.”
In recent years these hands-on experiences have expanded to middle schools, and now alongside state entities like the Department of Banking and Securities and the Department of Corrections, multiple Reality Fairs have been held to support former inmates from various Pennsylvania Correctional Facilities in an effort to provide these individuals the tools they need financially to make the most of their futures as they reenter their communities.
Playing the part of a used car salesman…
Volunteers are encouraged to give the attendees a variety of options in their specific booth, and to treat them as they would be in the real world: At this event, April played the part of the Car Salesman. “I was really excited to see how deeply the students were considering their options. A few however had taken the bait and purchased the nice brand-new top-of-the-line vehicle option, without considering how much their monthly payment, gas, insurance, and maintenance costs would be. Each one of those students later came back in to trade-in their cars for a reasonably priced option, or to switch to public transportation after they finished their full month of expenses.”
Dunn continues, “That was when I got to break it to them that their sparkly new vehicle dropped in value as soon as they drove it off the lot, and in the real world, they would be losing even more with the trade-in value being lower than what they purchased it for. They would get some laughs from their friends who had told them not to do it in the first place, but it definitely was a lesson learned! More than a few had mentioned how much they appreciate their parents taking care of all of this for them… I imagine there were some fun conversations at home that night when the parents asked about what they had learned that day!”
People Helping People
For many years prior to founding Eunomia, April worked in the Credit Union Industry where she became heavily involved in various financial literacy efforts across the state, including Reality Fairs. Her work with the Pennsylvania Credit Union Foundation is often times what she reminisces about and misses the most from her Credit Union life. Which is why the team was so excited to be invited to volunteer and step foot back into this world! The Eunomia Foundation was, and is, thrilled to be able to have an opportunity such as this, to connect previous experiences with current goals, of supporting our local communities – A well-known Credit Union motto is “People Helping People”, and we hope that through The Eunomia Foundation, we can continue to support the people in our communities in a variety of ways, well beyond simply being a retailer for CBD.
